Where Art Lovers Need to Go in Utah

There is nothing more an art lover enjoys doing than traveling, taking in all things beautiful that America has to offer. If you are an art lover and are wondering where you want to explore next, Utah offers several exciting collections. Utah is home to many nationally renowned museums and theatres. Here are our top 9 places to visit in Utah if you are an art lover.

Art at the Main

The perfect way to begin any trip is by checking out the local art scene. If you find yourself in Salt Lake City, take a drive over to Art at the Main. Art at the Main is home to dozens of local artists of the Salt Lake area. Nestled in the atrium of the Main Public Library, Art at the Main offers an enchanting experience. Soaring roofs and windows makes the gallery space come to life with light. The Art at the Main is run as a cooperative between Utah artists. Also, if you want to get your hands dirty with your art, presentations and classes are often offered throughout the week. Furthermore, during the holiday season, the art gallery comes alive with a thriving local market where locals sell their art.

The Soap Factory

If you find yourself in Provo, Utah, and are looking for a unique experience, The Soap Factory will do the job. Soap is definitely a unique medium to express artistic talent. The Soap Factory is home to dozens of one of a kind and breathtaking soap bars. Also, if you are feeling adventurous, the Soap Factory can provide ingredients for you to make your own soap work of art.

Gilgal Sculpture Garden

Nothing is more impressive than working with stone. Sculptors have always been a cornerstone, no pun intended, of the art world. If you find sculptures and other stone artistry enchanting, then the Gilgal Sculpture Garden in Salt Lake City was made for you. Nestled in the middle of a city park, Gilgal Sculpture Garden contains twelve iconic sculptures. The Gilgal Sculpture Garden was created in the mid-20th century by the photographer Thomas Child. Child wanted to create an art installation that encouraged the patron to work with their hands.

Hale Centre Theatre

If you like a good underdog story, look no further then the Hale Centre Theatre of West Valley (Sandy, UT). When the Hale Centre Theatre opened in 1985, they played there first show to a crowd of only twenty-five audience members. The audio of the show was produced by placing an old cassette player to a microphone. However, these days the Hale Centre Theatre is a world-class theatre that hosts award-winning shows. Also, the Hale Centre Theatre is considered one of the most state-of-the-art theatres in the United States. A unique theatre in the round, its twelve-month production schedule offers shows any time that you visit.

Ralphael Plescia’s Christian School

It wouldn’t be Salt Lake City without some unusual places to go. If you enjoy your art on the weird side, you will enjoy Ralphael Plescia’s Christian School offerings. For over fifty years, Ralph Plescia has been fascinated by the more unusual stories found in the Bible. He then takes the inspiration from the Bible to carve weird and sometimes frightening sculptures into the walls of the school. People from all over the country have traveled to see the haunting stonework in the hallways of this historic school. You may only attend a tour every Friday or Sunday. However, if you are desperate to see the school, Mr. Plescia will be more then happy to set up an appointment.

McMillen Fine Art Photography Gallery

Park City, Utah, is home to one of the most impressive photography galleries in America. The McMillen Fine Art Photography Gallery specializes in nature photography. With the breathtaking landscape photos, you will be taken back to a much simpler time. Also, due to size, the McMillen Fine Art Photography Gallery offers a more intimate experience between the viewer and art.

BYU Museum of Art

As one of the largest art museums in the Mountain West, this museum has held past exhibits of artists like M.C. Escher, Carl Bloch, and Norman Rockwell. It is a four-story building that is over 100,000 square feet, designed by architect James Langenheim. This inspiring place has a mission statement that says it all: "We hope your experience in the Museum will nurture a more reflective mind, a capacity for deeper inquiry, a stronger commitment to excellence and integrity, and heightened appreciation for others and their ideas." If you're an art lover in the Provo area, you do not want to miss this. Check out the link to see what exhibits are currently on display.

Anderson Tower Monument

The Anderson Tower Monument acts as a perfect reminder that sometimes your artistic endeavors may not succeed. Robert Anderson began work on the tower in Salt Lake City in the year 1884. Mr. Anderson was interested in honoring the ancient castles of England and Scotland, and so constructed a replica of the style. At the end of the construction, the tower stood at 54 feet. Unfortunately, the public lost interest in the tower. For this reason, the tower was knocked down in the year 1932. In later years a monument was constructed to symbolize the hard work and inspiration of Robert Anderson. It is important to know that this monument is hard to find, and we would recommend you research a route beforehand.

The Tabernacle

You can't have a list of things to do in Utah without mentioning The Tabernacle, home to the world-famous Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square (which has been referred to as "America's Choir"). The Tabernacle is a massive cathedral-like building that is built to be so acoustically sensitive, a pin dropped from the pulpit can be heard at the back of the hall. Sunday mornings at 9:30 am the Tabernacle Choir holds their weekly music program "Music and the Spoken Word." Thursday rehearsals are free admission and generally start at 7:30. They perform with mastery that any art lover is sure to find wonderful.

Utah is an excellent getaway to scratch that artistic itch. From museums to historical sights, you will never run out of things to gaze in amazement at. What are your favorite places to visit when you go to Utah?

Everything You Need To Know About Utah’s Famous Festival of Colors

The Holi festival, marked as one of the most colorful and joyful festivals in Hindu culture, is celebrated each year to bid farewell to the winter season and welcome spring. The festival is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of March – also known as the month of Phalgun in the Hindu culture.

In Utah, the festival is held each year at the Sri Radha Krishna Temple located in Spanish Fork. In addition to the crazy fun that accompanies the event, this temple is also fully welcoming to all people, regardless of their religion. Visitors are invited to throw a handful of colorful chalk (symbolizing worries) to the wind as they enjoy the event.

Here are some interesting facts you need to know about Utah’s famous Holi Festival of Colors.

Holi Festival Explained

The festival gets its name from Holika, a demoness sister of an evil king named Hiranyakashyap in the Hindu mythology. The legendary tale goes on to reveal that the evil king tried to forbid his son, Prahlad from worshipping Lord Vishnu. Prahlad, however, did not part with his faith and continued worshiping Vishnu.

In an attempt to get rid of his son, the villainous king ordered Holika (who was immune to fire) to enter the blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap. The story goes on that the evil-minded Holika was reduced to ashes, but Prahlad was saved because of his extreme devotion to Lord Vishnu.

Since then, the Holi celebrations have prevailed to serve as a reminder that good triumphs over evil - which reflects the Hindu belief that faith and devotion lead to salvation, and can be attained by everyone who believes.

The colors used in the festival hold special significance. Red symbolizes love, fertility, and matrimony, blue represents Krishna, while green stands for fresh beginnings.

Utah’s Holi Festival Details

This year (2019), the Holi festival will be on the last weekend of the month - on 30th and 31st, consecutively. On Saturday the 30th, the event will be open from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., and from 11.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. on Sunday the 31st.

There’s an entrance fee of $5 per person. The entry fee for children below the age of 12 is absolutely free, so you can tag your little kid or sibling along, provided you keep a close watch on them.

The temple provides the guests with ‘chalk’ which is actually colored corn-starch. The chalk should not stain your clothes (provided you don’t get wet), but I would still advise against wearing your best clothes.

Five assorted vivid colors (green, pink yellow, violet, & orange) are available on the festival grounds at the cost of $3 per 100g bag.

The colors provided are not only environmentally friendly, but also brightly colored, and beautifully scented. The nature of the colors means that they are also risk-free to people allergic to powders (apart from the small percentage allergic to corn).

The color throws start from noon, following each hour afterward. Even as you get to enjoy yourselves, please refrain yourself from throwing colors directly into other’s people eyes or mouth.

In addition to chalk throwing, there are numerous other fun activities which include dancing, yoga, the lighting of a bonfire, musical interludes, burning of an effigy in between the color throws, and much more.

The Do’s and Don’ts

If you plan to indulge in the fun activities that are lined up this year, bracing yourself with some tips might just be what you need to get the most out of the event.

Generally speaking, this event is more of a spiritual event than a religious one. The festival is meant to remove barriers and recognize all as part of one big spiritual family. This might explain why the event is becoming so popular, with the audience reportedly increasing each year.

As these festivities draw locals across the entire state, the numbers can reach up to 40,000 or more in a single day. With the attention the Holi festivals in Utah have been receiving lately, we’ve also seen an increase in visitors flying from all over the world so as to be part of the event.

Tips to get the most out of Utah’s Holi Festivities

  • Do not wear eye contacts to the color event. If it is protective gear you are seeking, there’re plenty of bandanas, sunglasses, and dust masks offered at a throwaway price on the grounds.
  • The dry powder provided by the temple is stain free as long as it remains dry. Once in contact with water, the powder is highly likely to stain your clothes which is why you are advised against wearing your ‘best’ clothes. In short, bring along clothes that you are fine with being ruined.
  • If you have breathing problems such as asthma or have corn allergies, it is advisable you refrain yourself from delving deep into the crowd since it is where color throwing starts.
  • Under no circumstances should you let your little ones wander deep into crowds alone. Make sure that they are well covered in protective gear also. If possible, carry them on your shoulders while delving deep into the crowd.
  • It may sound obvious, but make sure you refrain yourself from throwing colors at performers, musicians, passing cars, or the uniformed personnel as this could land you into unwanted trouble.

Things you should avoid doing at all costs

It is no secret that excitement can sometimes get the better of us, and we might end doing some things that we regret later. To ensure a smooth experience for you and others, make sure you refrain yourself from these acts.
  • Don’t bring outside colors as they will be confiscated on sight. The main reason why outside colors are not permitted is that they tend to threaten the existence of the festival altogether. Not all colors are friendly to the human skin, and the only way to guarantee that everyone stays safe is by sticking to the ones offered on the festival grounds.
  • Drugs, alcohol, and smoking are not permitted on the festival grounds.
  • Do not throw colors before the countdown ends, else, you will spoil the much-awaited fun.
  • Last but not least, refrain from violent acts. This should be a fun moment for all since no one has lesser rights to be there.

It’s a perfect place to explore while you’re in the Provo area and just one of many attractions that you'll find. So, what will you see at the Springville Museum of Art? We'll tell you!

The Springville Museum of Art, Springville, UT

At its official inception, the Springville Museum of Art was dedicated as a “Sanctuary of Beauty and a Temple of Contemplation.” As the museum has grown and expanded since those early years, it has remained true to that dedication. The lovely Spanish Colonial building has been host to many weddings and events and houses two permanent collections. New exhibits come frequently, so you can visit dozens of times and see different things. Additionally, the Sculpture Garden is a beautiful place to wander outdoors. This well-curated museum is a delight for lovers of art young and old.

Springville Museum of Art Exhibits

There are currently eight exhibits on display at the Springville Museum of Art. The diversity and quality of the exhibits prove that there really is something for everyone to enjoy. One of the museum's most impressive exhibits is "Russian Stories, Soviet Ideals," a collection of 20th-century Russian art on display until June 1, 2018. The high-quality, dramatic artwork of the exhibit focuses on the power of the human figure. At the time the museum began collecting Russian art, the art was very affordable. This gave the museum the opportunity to have an exceptional exhibit of Russian and American realism. The realism of these pieces offers an interesting contrast to the landscapes and impressionist pieces in the Utah visual fine art collection.

According to the Museum website, over 15 exhibitions are on display every year. In 2017, that includes the 44th Annual Quilt Show, "Sanctuaries of the Mind," "Round Up: Icons of the West," and more. Exhibitions that feature local artists, like the "Three-Mile Radius" and "Glimpses of Springville" are always a treat.

The Springfield Museum of Art hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. You can check their calendar for upcoming events. For more information, visit the museum online, or call (801) 489-2727. The museum is located at 126 E 400 S, Springville, UT 84633.
