Why Rock Canyon in Utah Is One of the Best Hikes

Jutting out from the Wasatch Mountains, Rock Canyon in Utah is one of the most popular attractions of the Provo area. Outdoor enthusiasts of multiple interests take advantage of the hiking, climbing, and camping spots found within the canyon, year in and year out. We could leave it at that (which that alone might be enough to prompt a visit) or we could tell you why Rock Canyon in Utah is one of the best hikes you’ll find in the state. So strap on your backpack, dust off your hiking shoes and get ready to find out what makes this destination so popular.

Looking for fun things to do in the Provo area? Whether you're looking for a hiking adventure or an art gallery, the free Vacation Guide from Hines Mansion is your best resource to find great things to do while you're here.

Hiking Rock Canyon Utah

Rock Canyon is located in Provo, UT, and is impossible to miss from the city. The expansive Wasatch Mountains provide a beautiful backdrop to Provo, too. Rock Canyon contains several hikes: The Rock Canyon Trail, the Squaw Peak Hike, and the Y Mountain Trail, each varying in length and difficulty. Here’s a quick look at the trails, and what to expect!

Rock Canyon Trail

This is the most popular of the canyon’s trails, an out-and-back trail that clocks in at 5.6 miles. You can expect an elevation change of 1,630 feet, so get ready to break a sweat. The trail is open year-round and is dog-friendly. If you’re looking for a nice balance between a trying trek and an easy stroll, Rock Canyon Trail is a great choice.

Squaw Peak Trail

If you want the best view of the surrounding area, then head to Squaw Peak Trail! This hike is notably more intense than the Rock Canyon Trail, though. Rated as hard (as compared to “moderate” for Rock Canyon), the trail features over 2,700 feet of elevation change and measures 7.1 miles. However, the view from the top is worth the trip, and it rewards with a stunning look at Provo and the surrounding mountains.

“Y” Mountain Trail

The “Y” Mountain earned its name for the giant letter “Y” installed there, which was supposed to be accompanied by “B” and “U” for Provo’s Brigham Young University. Thanks to the giant marker, you’ll have no trouble locating it. What the trail lacks in length, it makes up for in height. It’s only 2.4 miles long, but the elevation change in that short distance measures just over 3,300 feet. The Y Mountain Trail is a popular choice for not only hikers but trail runners too.

The Best Places in Provo to Zipline

Provo ziplines are some of the most fun in the nation, and each offers a distinct experience and gorgeous, scenic views. If you've never been ziplining, there’s not a better place to start than with a Provo zipline adventure!

Adventure Zipline Utah/Max Zipline/Provo Canyon Adventures

Nestled in the Wasatch Mountains, this 5-zipline tour takes you above the canopy in full view of Mt. Timpanogos and the famous Provo River. There’s a short walk between each of the ziplines, nothing very strenuous, and the incredible views of the mountains, river, and wildlife are well worth it! The staff is excellent (you’ll have two guides for your adventure), and this is a great course for beginners. The company also offers horseback rides, stand-up paddleboarding down the Provo river, and ATV Ranger tours. Tour time is approximately one hour.

High Country Adventure’s Sundance Zipline

If you’re a real thrill seeker, this is probably the course for you. If you do all five spans (you can also choose to do three), the course is two miles long, and you’ll be reaching speeds of about 65 mph! This course also has a total vertical drop of 2,100 feet, the most of any zipline in the US. One other unique thing about this course is the parallel ziplines, so you can zip along next to your friend! It’s neat to experience this side-by-side. The company also offers rafting and kayaking. Tour time is approximately 2-3 hours, depending on the tour.

CLAS Ropes Course

This zip-tour has six ziplines along and across the Provo River. Along the way, there are different challenges to participate in (such as a bean bag toss while zipping to each platform)! And this does not have to be a strictly ziplining experience! If you have a large group and are looking to do some bonding, there’s no better way to do that than at this ropes course! With team-building games, a low ropes course (with balancing challenges), and a high ropes course, they can meet the needs of any group! The high ropes course has a 400 ft. zipline, as well as a climbing wall and a giant swing!

Tips Before You Enjoy a Provo Zipline Adventure

  • Make your reservation in advance! The tours will do their best to be accommodating, but reservations are the way to go. Along those lines, be on time, as your tour may not be able to wait for you.

  • Dress appropriately. Consider that the mountains may be cooler than the town, and keep in mind that they will operate during the rain as well. Wear close-toed shoes (don’t want those sandals falling off your feet!) and pants or shorts (not skirts!). Layering might be a good idea.

  • Tip your guide!

  • Check out the other adventures these companies have to offer and enjoy spending a beautiful day outdoors.
