4 Things You'll See at the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum

With its rich history of providing top-notch education and successful sports programs, Brigham Young University is one of Provo’s finest features. However, you don’t have to be a college student or a sports fan to enjoy BYU. Located on the school’s campus, the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum offers exciting exhibits, educational programs, and a wealth of knowledge about the world we live in. You will love exploring one of the best BYU museums. Plus, admission is free!

4 Things You'll See at the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum

1. Live Animals!

Museums are typically known for what they have on display, not what’s living and breathing. However, the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum takes what they offer to another level with their Live Animal Shows! The museum features daily live animal shows for free, perfect for preschoolers to fifth graders, but anyone can enjoy them. Trained animal professionals will both educate and entertain with an assortment of furry, feathered, and scaled friends.

2. Fascinating Research Collections

If it can swim, flap, flop, or crawl, there’s a good chance that it’s represented in the museum’s research collections. Learn more about the fascinating world of birds, bugs, mammals, and more at the eight different collections.

3. Exciting Exhibits

There are ten different exhibits throughout the museum! If you want to learn about some of nature’s most fierce creatures, check out “Life on Top: Apex Predators” and explore the impact these animals have on their environment. Or, increase your environmental awareness at the “Protect Your Planet” exhibit, dedicated to endangered and extinct species.

4. Museum Events

Wildlife Adventures, weekly Discovery Readings, Nature Experienceships, lectures, and an assortment of other events are all part of the excitement at the museum! Young or old, there’s an event here for you that’s both fun and informative. Past events have included Night at the Museums, Date Night, a Photography Show, and more. Keep an eye on the Museum Calendar for upcoming events.

Visiting the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum

Like other BYU museums, admission is free. Hours are 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday. For regular updates on events, animals, and more, follow the museum on Facebook! For more information, visit the museum online, or call (801) 422-5050.

What You Will See When You Explore Provo Canyon

Photographers, hikers, and anyone with an appreciation for stunning natural beauty know that Utah is chock full of picture-perfect views and endless outdoor activities. Provo Canyon is one of Utah’s most popular destinations, and with good reason. Bordered by Mount Timpanogos and Cascade Mountain, Provo Canyon is home to parks, hiking trails, a scenic byway, and more! Utah residents and visitors alike love visiting this Utah Valley gem. Here’s what you’ll see at Provo Canyon!

Provo Canyon

Located in the Wasatch Mountain Range, Provo Canyon is a gateway to both stunning scenery and an abundance of outdoor activities. From Provo, the canyon’s western entrance in Orem can be reached in only minutes.

Hiking Trails

Provo Canyon offers access to trails of Mount Timpanogos. At nearly 12,000 feet high, Mount Timpanogos is the second tallest peak in the Wasatch Mountains, out measured only by Mount Nebo. Timpanogos is not only one of the best mountains to hike in Utah but the nation, as well. According to Utah.com, the best way to hike this Wasatch beast is either the Aspen Grove Trail or the Timpooneke Trail. The view from the top of the mountain is matchless. Take note, though - these trails aren’t for beginners.

On the southern side of the canyon is Cascade Mountain. While it’s shorter than its towering neighbor to the north, the hike is much more difficult. Only serious hikers should consider the trek!

Not a trail veteran? Don’t worry, because Provo Canyon offers easy hikes, too. One of the friendliest hikes is the Bridal Veil Falls trail. Bridal Veil Falls is one of Utah’s most beautiful natural attractions, and you can see it for yourself with a short hike. The trail is rated “Easy” and only 1.3 miles long, according to AllTrails.

Provo Canyon Parks

One of the canyon’s best features are the parks! Canyon Glen Park and Nunns Park are perfect places to take the family. Canyon Glen Park has an amphitheatre and volleyball court (among many other things), and Nunns Park is a great place to camp, bike, fish, and more.

Hiking is required to get to the top of Mount Timpanogos, but not the park! Easily accessible Provo Canyon Road, Mt. Timpanogos Park offers pavilions you can reserve and plenty of room to stretch.

Towards the Heber Valley at the canyon’s east end is Deer Creek State Park. Camp, take a boat out on Deer Creek Reservoir and go fishing, and more.

In the winter, head to Soldier Hollow (not far from the reservoir), an excellent place for skiing and the site of the 2002 Winter Olympics Nordic trials.

The Provo Canyon Scenic Byway

You don’t have to lace up your hiking boots to enjoy Provo Canyon - in fact, you stay in the seat of your car. Start in Provo and take the Provo Canyon Scenic Byway on US 189 all the way to Heber Valley, and you’ll be rewarded with a plethora of incredible views. The byway passes Bridal Veil Falls, the Deer Creek Reservoir, and more while offering plenty of places to park.

Comedysportz is an improv comedy club that pits two teams (Red and Blue) of the club’s players against each other, in a series of hilarious competition, refereed by another Comedysportz member. Songs, skits, and crowd participation are all part of the overall spontaneous silliness during a Comedysportz Provo show. Cast members rotate each night, and the comedy is always clean and family friendly! To see the players in action, visit their YouTube channel, or follow them on Facebook.

Comedysportz Training Center

If comedy is your passion, then check out the Comedysportz Training Center! According to Comedysportz’ website, the Workshops offers a five-week workshop that allows you to get a taste of what improv comedy is like. It’s a great option for both curious newcomers and aspiring actors.
