The ranger-led hike is considered strenuous and the paved trail is about 1.5 miles one way. Make sure to purchase your tickets in advance to avoid long lines! Around 340 million years ago, a warm shallow sea covered most parts of what later came to be Utah. As small marine animals died, all that remained was their skeletons that settled into sediments. Though coral fossils are most commonly found, marine animal fossils are often found at the entrance to the Hansen Cave and inside the cave.

Take This Trail For a Challenge Up Buckley Mountain

Buckley Mountain has a few trails heading up its 9,511-foot peak, but this one is a decent challenge for any hiker who wants to be tested. Head up the trail from Slate Canyon where there are a bathroom and parking lot, roughly 10 minutes Provo Center Street Exit on Highway I-15. Here are some directions to help point you onto the right path:

• Start up the trail in Slate Canyon for three miles.


• Take a left at the fork and continue up the trail until you see two signposts.


• Follow the signpost for Forest Road 027.


• The narrow trail leads you through the forest for about one mile.


• You’ll come upon Squaw Peak Road and continue South for 2.5 miles.


• After this, you’ll reach a parking lot, from which you’ll bushwhack the rest of the way up the mountain.


• Upon reaching the peak, get your camera out and enjoy the view!

Mount Timpanogos Trail from Aspen Grove

Take this gorgeous trail from the Aspen Grove trailhead and climb 7,000 feet to the exhilarating peak. This hike is a steep one, and it is rated as hard and not recommended for a novice hiker.

Squaw Peak Trail

The Squaw Peak Trail is one of the most popular trails in the area with dramatic rock faces and a hike through a wooded hillside. You’ll see incredible views of Squaw Peak. This hike, in particular, is gorgeous during the fall after the aspens have turned bright gold.

Bridal Veil Falls Trail

This easy trail features the 607-foot double-cataract waterfall, Bridal Veil Falls. The gentle gradient gains only 150 feet over 1.3 miles, and it’s only a short way out of town. You’ll love the view, and you can bring your dog!

The “Y” Mountain Trail

The “Y” Trail is a paved trail going up Y Mountain. You’ll find that it’s well-lit and that it’s very popular with college students. Savor the wonderful views of the Provo area and Utah Lake.

Rock Canyon Trail

The out-and-back trail is one of the more popular trails in the area. It’s a moderate hike at about 5.6 miles. There is an elevation change of 1,630 feet, so you’ll work up a sweat. The trail is open year-round and is dog-friendly. So, this trail makes a nice moderate trek for any hiker.

Buffalo Peak Trail

This short hike is only about one-mile roundtrip, making it the perfect family hike. It’s a popular hike for young families as it is well-marked and not too difficult. There is one overlook with gorgeous views and a relatively easy summit.

Bridal Veil Falls in Utah Makes a Great Day Trip from Provo

When you set out from Provo toward Bridal Veil Falls in Utah, you’ll head off into the mountains. Soon enough, you’ll come up Highway 189 and upon the canyon and toward the falls. There are plenty of large, mature trees for a picnic, and a lot of space to throw around a football or frisbee. The park is a great place to hang out on a nice day and enjoy the outdoors. Then, take the Bridal Veil Falls trail to the beautiful, natural waterfall. The 607-foot, double-cataract waterfall can be found at the southern end of Provo Canyon. And, the gentle, 1.3-miles trail gains only 150 feet in elevation as you trek it. It’s an out-and-back trail leading you right to the beautiful falls. The sheer beauty of the falls may be the highlight of your trip!

If you want to bring Fido with you, go for it! The trail is dog-friendly as long as he/she is on a leash. It’s a great way to get the whole family outdoors and is even handicap accessible. You Don’t Need a Library Card to Check Out the Harold B Lee Library

You will notice something odd about the library when you first come to it. The glass exterior doesn’t indicate the presence of a library. Instead, it looks more like a giant greenhouse. Don’t be fooled, though. As soon as you walk in, you’ll start your descent into 665,000 square feet of library resources. The library houses more than six million items in its extensive collections. You are sure to feel small in this massive library. Also, you might get lost in the 98 miles of shelving within the Harold B Lee Library. Add in a seating capacity of 4,600 and over 10,000 patrons visiting the library daily, and you have one of the largest, most important libraries in the state of Utah.

History of the Library

Back in the earliest days of Brigham Young University when it was called Brigham Young Academy, Karl G. Maeser was Principal. During his tenure, he began to build a small library of books and materials from gifts, donations, and what he could scavenge for free. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the library he had put together, including the entire library collection. As the academy grew more, though, the library collection accumulated. And, by 1903, the Brigham Young Academy grew into Brigham Young University. With that growth came more space, which the library quickly outgrew. In 1924, a $125,000 budget for the BYU came through to include 40,000 books and 35,000 pamphlets into a new library space.

Over the next 50 years, the library went through two more name changes and expansions when, finally, in 1996, the library underwent its most dramatic change. The building standing today as the Harold B Lee Library at BYU came as a result. The beautiful glass exterior lets in natural light, giving the library a unique atmosphere that imparts inspiration to students and faculty alike. The extensive array of information alone is worthy of a visit.

Inside the Museum

The design of the museum was commissioned to Los Angeles architect, James Langenheim. To create a museum that housed some of the most meaningful art, the building itself needed to be a work of art. This commitment to form inspired the enlistment of the former directors of lighting from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, LeMar Terry and Stuart Silver. With their expertise, the museum architecture became a constant change of size, direction, form, and light. The articulated triangular shape of the museum is designed to be a work of art. As a result, it offers the best lighting in which to view the art.

In addition to its architectural and artistic prowess, the expansive BYU Museum of Art houses 10 exhibition galleries, an auditorium, classrooms, a print study room, a small theater, gift shop, and administrative offices. It also has cutting-edge fabrication, registration, imaging, and storage areas all for research and study purposes.  

During the Year

The BYU Museum of Art plays host to a number of school events, special exhibitions, speakers, musicians, and more. Most notable is famous activist and Civil Rights Movement icon, Ruby Bridges, who came to lecture students and the public alike. The museum seeks to feature artists who break the mold of norms and traditional culture. Gabriel Dawe is one of those. His Plexus no. 29 is on display as soon as you walk in the door. His artwork explores the concept of light as a language of symbolism. Using colored filament, Dawe has created a huge masterpiece of light worthy of your visit.

While admission is free to the public, there are events through the year that require a ticket. The BYU Museum of Art hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

What You Need to Know About Peaks Ice Arena in Provo UT

The Peaks Ice Arena in Provo UT is open year-round as a family recreation facility located at the base of the Wasatch Mountains. Both Rock Canyon and Provo Canyon are only minutes from the city, providing both scenic views and plenty of hiking and climbing trails. The Springville Museum of Art, Springville, UT

At its official inception, the Springville Museum of Art was dedicated as a “Sanctuary of Beauty and a Temple of Contemplation.” As the museum has grown and expanded since those early years, it has remained true to that dedication. The lovely Spanish Colonial building has been host to many weddings and events and houses two permanent collections. New exhibits come frequently, so you can visit dozens of times and see different things. Additionally, the Sculpture Garden is a beautiful place to wander outdoors. This well-curated museum is a delight for lovers of art young and old.

Springville Museum of Art Exhibits

There are currently eight exhibits on display at the Springville Museum of Art. The diversity and quality of the exhibits prove that there really is something for everyone to enjoy. One of the museum's most impressive exhibits is "Russian Stories, Soviet Ideals," a collection of 20th-century Russian art on display until June 1, 2018. The high-quality, dramatic artwork of the exhibit focuses on the power of the human figure. At the time the museum began collecting Russian art, the art was very affordable. This gave the museum the opportunity to have an exceptional exhibit of Russian and American realism. The realism of these pieces offers an interesting contrast to the landscapes and impressionist pieces in the Utah visual fine art collection.

According to the Museum website, over 15 exhibitions are on display every year. In 2017, that includes the 44th Annual Quilt Show, "Sanctuaries of the Mind," "Round Up: Icons of the West," and more. Exhibitions that feature local artists, like the "Three-Mile Radius" and "Glimpses of Springville" are always a treat.
