You Don’t Need a Library Card to Check Out the Harold B Lee Library
You will notice something odd about the library when you first come to it. The glass exterior doesn’t indicate the presence of a library. Instead, it looks more like a giant greenhouse. Don’t be fooled, though. As soon as you walk in, you’ll start your descent into 665,000 square feet of library resources. The library houses more than six million items in its extensive collections. You are sure to feel small in this massive library. Also, you might get lost in the 98 miles of shelving within the Harold B Lee Library. Add in a seating capacity of 4,600 and over 10,000 patrons visiting the library daily, and you have one of the largest, most important libraries in the state of Utah.
History of the Library
Back in the earliest days of Brigham Young University when it was called Brigham Young Academy, Karl G. Maeser was Principal. During his tenure, he began to build a small library of books and materials from gifts, donations, and what he could scavenge for free. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the library he had put together, including the entire library collection. As the academy grew more, though, the library collection accumulated. And, by 1903, the Brigham Young Academy grew into Brigham Young University. With that growth came more space, which the library quickly outgrew. In 1924, a $125,000 budget for the BYU came through to include 40,000 books and 35,000 pamphlets into a new library space.
Over the next 50 years, the library went through two more name changes and expansions when, finally, in 1996, the library underwent its most dramatic change. The building standing today as the Harold B Lee Library at BYU came as a result. The beautiful glass exterior lets in natural light, giving the library a unique atmosphere that imparts inspiration to students and faculty alike. The extensive array of information alone is worthy of a visit.

The BYU Museum of Art Holds an Important Place in Provo Culture

Inside the Museum
The design of the museum was commissioned to Los Angeles architect, James Langenheim. To create a museum that housed some of the most meaningful art, the building itself needed to be a work of art. This commitment to form inspired the enlistment of the former directors of lighting from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, LeMar Terry and Stuart Silver. With their expertise, the museum architecture became a constant change of size, direction, form, and light. The articulated triangular shape of the museum is designed to be a work of art. As a result, it offers the best lighting in which to view the art.
In addition to its architectural and artistic prowess, the expansive BYU Museum of Art houses 10 exhibition galleries, an auditorium, classrooms, a print study room, a small theater, gift shop, and administrative offices. It also has cutting-edge fabrication, registration, imaging, and storage areas all for research and study purposes.
During the Year
The BYU Museum of Art plays host to a number of school events, special exhibitions, speakers, musicians, and more. Most notable is famous activist and Civil Rights Movement icon, Ruby Bridges, who came to lecture students and the public alike. The museum seeks to feature artists who break the mold of norms and traditional culture. Gabriel Dawe is one of those. His Plexus no. 29 is on display as soon as you walk in the door. His artwork explores the concept of light as a language of symbolism. Using colored filament, Dawe has created a huge masterpiece of light worthy of your visit.
While admission is free to the public, there are events through the year that require a ticket. The BYU Museum of Art hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

What You Need to Know About Peaks Ice Arena in Provo UT
The Peaks Ice Arena in Provo UT is open year-round as a family recreation facility located at the base of the Wasatch Mountains. There you’ll find youth and adult programs like “Learn to Skate,” youth and adult hockey leagues and lessons, as well as the BYU and UVU hockey games. You’ll also have the chance for public skating, too! Within the facility, two indoor turf fields are used for soccer, lacrosse, rugby, and ultimate frisbee.
